As reported by the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), Alberta’s oil production was 3.8 MMb/d in September 2024 (rightmost stacked bars in chart below), slightly behind the production level of one year ago, and 224 Mb/d lower than August. The September decline was driven primarily by a pullback of 171 Mb/d in the output of synthetic crude oil (SCO, red bars). Turnaround work at Shell’s Scotford Upgrader and Suncor’s Base Plant during the month were the likely drivers of the downturn in SCO production. A small pullback of 5 Mb/d in the output of non-upgraded bitumen (green bars) placed it below 2 MMb/d for the first time since January.
