After several years of prioritizing balance sheet repair and shareholder returns, upstream E&Ps are facing a dramatically different commodity environment across oil and natural gas markets, a sharp reversal from the shrinking profits and cash flows over the previous two years. A frigid winter across the eastern half of the U.S. sent Appalachian gas prices higher in Q1 2026 and oil prices remained comparatively stable for two months before soaring with the onset of the Iran war. With cash flows rising, producers faced pressures to reassess priorities as hydrocarbon prices increased. In today’s RBN blog, we examine how each peer group responded to pressure to allocate their rising cash flows in Q1 2026 and what those decisions may signal about management priorities heading into the rest of the year.
About the song
“World in Changes” was written by Dave Mason and appears as the first song on side two of his debut studio solo album, Alone Together. The lyrics center around the confusion and unpredictability of romantic relationships, but could just as easily be applied to surviving in today’s world. Personnel on the record were: Dave Mason (vocals, acoustic, electric guitars), Leon Russell (keyboards), Carl Radle (bass) and Jim Gordon (drums).
Alone Together was recorded in 1970 at Sunset Sound and Elektra Sound in Hollywood and produced by Dave Mason and Tommy LiPuma. The album features an impressive crew of guest musicians, including Leon Russell, Jim Capaldi, Rita Coolidge, Delaney & Bonnie, Claudia Lannear and Jim Keltner. About 30% of the first pressings of the album were done in marble-swirl colored vinyl. Released in July 1970, it went to #22 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and has been certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. One single, “Only You Know and I Know,” was released from the LP. Delaney & Bonnie would have a Top 20 hit with their rendition of the song.
Dave Mason was an English singer, songwriter and musician who came to prominence as a founding member of British rock band Traffic in 1967. After leaving Traffic in 1968, he began a solo career that included sessions with Jimi Hendrix, George Harrison, Leon Russell, Delaney & Bonnie, and Eric Clapton. He released his first studio solo LP, Alone Together, in 1970. He released 15 studio albums, seven live albums, 12 compilation albums, an EP, and 28 singles. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic in March 2004. Mason retired from touring in September 2025 due to health issues. He died at his home in Gardnerville, Nevada, in April at 79.
