U.S. propane storage is quite high. Last year's five-year high has been passed, with storage for the week ending December 9 showing more than 90 MMbbl, according to the Energy Information Administration. At this level, U.S. propane storage is 1.7 MMbbl or 2% above 2023's record highs. The storage began growing earlier in the year because of higher production levels and lackluster exports.
A comparison of storage draws for the previous 8 weeks from October 24, however, paints a positive picture (at least for those who want lower storage levels). The graph below shows the cumulative storage withdrawals from the week ending October 24 (week 42) through the week ending December 9 (week 50). These are placed in ascending order with the years on the far left of the horizontal axis (2020 with a 16 MMbbl draw) representing the biggest storage withdrawals and the year on the right representing a cumulative storage build during the 8-week period (2022 with a 1.4 MMbbl build). The green bar represents the 11-year average cumulative withdrawal of 7.8 MMbbl. The red bar represents 2024's withdrawals with 13 MMbbl.
