Tallgrass Energy has ambitions to build a greenfield natural gas pipeline from the Permian Basin to the Rockies Express Pipeline, the company said this week.

Tallgrass is still early in this process, but the company said it has secured anchor shipper precedent agreements for the pipeline, which will deliver gas to REX and "other points of delivery."

The company plans to launch another open season soon for more shippers. The pipeline is intended to handle up to 2.4 Bcf/d of natural gas transportation and the final capacity would depend on the level of shipper commitments.

While the exact route of this pipeline hasn’t been outlined, the map below shows the general vicinity and scale of a potential route from the Permian Basin to REX. REX was originally built in the late 2000s to ship Rockies’ gas to the Northeast but was made bi-directional across much of its length to allow Marcellus/Utica gas to flow west toward the Midwest. While the pipeline is generally full moving East to West, it does have capacity to move West to East.

The rationale for the pipeline appears to be to provide additional supply options to Rockies and Midwest markets and at the same time an outlet for Permian gas that doesn't target the Gulf Coast.
