In 2024, the U.S. benchmark Henry Hub natural gas spot price averaged $2.21 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) – the lowest annual price reported in inflation-adjusted dollars, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
The annual average Henry Hub natural gas spot price in 2024 was down 16% from its 2023 average and down 68% from its 2022 average – making it the largest two-year decline on record (see chart below).
The monthly average Henry Hub spot natural gas price in 2024 ranged from $3.25/MMBtu in January to a low of $1.51/MMBtu in March, reflecting a narrower $1.74/MMBtu range of monthly prices across the year. That's much lower than the average range of $2.32/MMBtu over the previous five years.
A myriad of factors influenced these low numbers, including high natural gas inventories, robust supply, and weak demand. For instance, the winter of 2023-2024 was warmer than usual, which led to lower-than-average residential and commercial natural gas consumption.
However, the spot Henry Hub natural gas price began to rise in December due to closer-to-normal seasonal winter temperatures that increased demand for space heating.
