The price of U.S. ethylene on the Gulf Coast swooned to only 16.25 cents per pound on Friday, the lowest level since the earliest days of COVID in 2020, and historically a very low price for the petrochemical building block.
As shown in the left graph, the price of U.S. ethylene has averaged 37 c/lb since 2007, with a consistent annual average of 57 c/lb from 2011 to 2014, then falling to average 18 c/lb in 2018-20. Ethylene went along for the ride when crude oil ramped up in 2021-22, hitting 63 c/lb in April 2021, but since then it has been on a downhill slide. In January 2022, ethylene peaked at 45 c/lb, fell to 20 c/lb in January 2023, and to only 16.25 c/lb last week.
