The Permian Basin rig count jumped up by 4 rigs last week and is at its highest level since June 2025. The strong rig count will set the basin up for additional gas production growth in the coming months. So far this year around 2.3 Bcf/d of new takeaway capacity has come online, and Blackcomb is expected to add an additional 2.5 Bcf/d of capacity by the end of the year. Permian production during the week ended October 12 averaged a record high 23.9 Bcf/d.

Gas flows leaving the Permian Basin increased last week, led by a surge in westbound shipments, as shown in the chart above. Deliveries to the West averaged 2.5 Bcf/d, up 0.2 Bcf/d week-on-week, driven by increased volumes on El Paso Pipeline. Westbound flows remain below typical levels for this time of year but are much stronger than in recent weeks. Constraints on El Paso at the California border have limited deliveries to the West despite hot weather in California. Northbound flows averaged 2 Bcf/d, up 0.2 Bcf/d week-on-week, primarily supported by higher volumes on El Paso toward both the Midcontinent and San Juan. Eastbound flows held steady at 14.9 Bcf/d, with strong reported volumes on greenfield pipelines.
