ExxonMobil is looking to add a new ethylene plant in Point Comfort, Texas - not far from Formosa's Plastics USA plant. The $8.6 billion project, dubbed the Coastal Plain Project, is still in the early stages, but ExxonMobil’s tax abatement filings and commercial feelers suggest it’s prioritizing this build over any contemplated expansion at the relatively new Gulf Coast Growth Ventures (GCGV) plant near Corpus Christi (GCGV is a JV with Sabic).

Ethane production continues to grow with ever-increasing NGL production.  Givent the supply, cracking more of it at home rather than exporting all the additional production could make a lot of sense. Ethane-only crackers like the one ExxonMobil is planning are designed to take full advantage of high ethylene yields from cheap domestic supply. If it moves forward, the project would mark another major investment in the U.S. Gulf Coast’s petchem complex, capitalizing on the region’s well-developed infrastructure and pipeline connectivity.
