In one of the sharpest turnarounds in years, the Mont Belvieu ethane-to-gas ratio has jumped from under 0.8X in June to 1.32X as of Friday — signaling the prospects for lower ethane rejection across much of the U.S. (see right graph). The ratio, which compares Mont Belvieu ethane prices to Henry Hub natural gas on a BTU basis, underscores the spotlight that has been on ethane this year.
This summer, the U.S. Department of Commerce temporarily halted ethane exports to China during the tariff skirmish, sending ethane spot prices plunging into the teens on fears of severe oversupply. But that dispute was resolved and shipments resumed. That just happened to coincide with new ethane export capacity coming online at Energy Transfer’s Nederland terminal and Enterprise’s new Neches River facility. In the first half of September alone, U.S. ethane exports averaged 649 Mb/d — up 161 Mb/d, or 33%, from August — on pace for a new record if sustained through the rest of the month.
