So far, 2024 has been a bad year for ethane prices, and it’s getting worse. As shown in the right graph, on Friday Mont Belvieu ethane dropped below 13 c/gal, the first time that has happened since the bad old days of 2020 COVID. In fact, the average ethane price for July 2024 is lower than at any time since March 2020.
There are three things dragging the market down. First, production of NGLs has been relatively strong, pushed higher by new gas processing capacity in the Permian. Second, ethane exports have been down, limited by global demand. And finally, natural gas prices have been hammered, making rejection of ethane less attractive. Natural gas settled at only $2.01/MMbtu on Friday.
Put all those factors together and it’s bearish for ethane, which of course is very good for petrochemical plants running ethane as a steam cracker feedstock.
