Commonwealth LNG is asking the FERC for more time to construct its 9.5 MMtpa LNG export facility near Cameron, Louisiana. The company currently has until November 2027 to build the facility; however, as it has yet to take FID and start construction, that date is no longer realistic. They are asking for another four years to complete the project, with completion slated for December 31, 2031.
The company is citing the delays due to Biden's pause on non-FTA permits calling them "unprecedented" and "historic." It now has its non-FTA permit. That, along with the 5 MMtpa in signed offtake agreements, make the project more realistic, though it still faces some headwinds.
The graph below shows the expected increases in feedgas demand in the U.S. between 2025 and the end of 2030. For the year, 2025 feedgas demand is expected at 16.1 Bcf/d, up from 13.4 Bcf/d in 2024. By 2030, total feedgas demand for LNG is forecast to average 30.9 Bcf/d, with the highest level expected in December when feedgas demand is 31.6 Bcf/d. The Commonwealth facility would add another 1.3 Bcf/d to the demand stack should it take FID.
