Rick Smead, Managing Director of RBN Energy Advisory Services, presents a detailed two-part look at natural gas pipelines, their history, regulation and how new projects are dealt with.  The focus is heavily on federally regulated interstate pipelines, but with some coverage of intrastate pipelines as well. 

Part 1 covers the background of the major players in the industry, their holding companies and how they’ve evolved over time. Then, transitioning through a history of major milestones in the natural gas industry, we explained FERC and state regulation of interstate and intrastate pipelines and the business impact.

Part 2 examines the FERC approval process and court challenges, the different ways to finance a new project, and the proprietary RBN model for a preliminary rough estimate of rates for either an interstate or intrastate stand-alone major pipeline.
