NextDecade has withdrawn its application for Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) authorization to build a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project at the company’s Rio Grande LNG facility currently under construction in far South Texas.

NextDecade said it asked the FERC to cease reviewing the CCS project, noting that it was not sufficiently developed to allow FERC’s scrutiny to continue.

Construction of the first phase of the 5.5 MMtpa Rio Grande LNG facility is ongoing, with the first of three trains targeted for startup in late 2027, followed by Train 2 in mid-2028 and Train 3 in late 2028. A U.S. appeals court vacated the LNG project’s FERC authorization on August 6, citing insufficient environmental impact analysis, of which a large portion involved the proposed CCS project. NextDecade said it remains committed to taking any available legal and regulatory actions to avoid startup delays.
