APA, an E&P with assests in the Permian, Egypt and Suriname among others, recently highlighted significant efficiency gains in the Permian. Like we've seen with some other producers, APA aims to maintain current production despite dropping their rig count and they expect to continue to build their inventory of drilled but uncompleted (DUC) wells (see slide below from APA's Q2 earnings call).
What's notable about APA's strategy is that they're bucking the trend of longer, more intense fracs and instead opting for denser well spacing and smaller fracs. While the average productivity of the wells will decline, APA anticipates that the strategy will enable them to squeeze out more barrels out of the rock in total (a higher estimated ultimate recovery or EUR) and extend their acreage inventory. What's more, APA said that this strategy could also lower their break-even economics.
